Syosset is a big, family-heavy hamlet on the North Shore's inland side — the LIRR station, a Jackson Avenue downtown, and postwar neighborhoods that grow larger and more wooded toward the estate villages. The housing is mostly 1950s and '60s splits and ranches on the grid around the Syosset LIRR station, 1970s and '80s Colonials in the newer sections toward Woodbury, and larger homes on wooded lots toward Muttontown, and the blocks around the Syosset LIRR station and Jackson Avenue's shops each light up a little differently in December.

Big trees and long driveways are the gift and the problem of a wooded lot: plenty to light, nothing near a plug. That's the weather half of the job.
