Cold Spring Harbor is a tiny historic hamlet on the Nassau–Suffolk line — a whaling-era Main Street, the Laboratory campus along the water, and estate roads climbing away from the harbor. Between the Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum and the Cold Spring Harbor LIRR station the housing shifts from 19th-century whaling-era homes along Main Street and Harbor Road to 1960s ranches and Colonials in the inland blocks, with estate properties on the hills above the harbor in between — three different jobs for a lighting crew.

Historic Main Street homes get clip-only installation — no fasteners in original clapboard or trim. Harbor neighborhoods are sheltered from open-water wind but not from the damp, salty air that sits over them all winter. Sealed commercial strands everywhere, and a ladder plan drawn up on the design visit for the terraced lots that drop toward the water.
