Shelter Island is the island between the forks — a year-round Center, Mashomack Preserve covering a third of it, and water-front lanes from Ram Island to West Neck, all reached by ferry. Between the Shelter Island Center and the South Ferry landing the housing shifts from 1950s and '60s ranches and Capes in the Center and on the wooded lanes to shingle-style estates on Ram Island and Silver Beach, with bay-front homes on Coecles Harbor and West Neck in between — three different jobs for a lighting crew.

Bay wind is steady rather than gusty, which is worse for lights — it works a loose clip all night, every night, until something lets go. That's the weather half of the job. The Shelter Island half: everything comes over by ferry — we schedule dedicated Shelter Island days and combine installs when we can.
